Justerini & Brooks Launch the Highly Anticipated Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2009 Vintage
Fine wine merchants, Justerini & Brooks, launch the latest vintage of Philipponnat’s iconic single vineyard Champagne Clos des Goisses. Having spent 8 years maturing sur lie in the Philipponnat cellars, Clos des Goisses 2009 is a testament to, and celebration of, the terroir from which it hails.
The great Clos des Goisses vineyard, located in Mareuil-sur-Ay, is one of Champagne’s most magisterial plots of land. Rising vertiginously from the Marne Canal, this 5.5ha walled vineyard, the largest such Clos in all of Champagne, is also the steepest in the region. Such an incline, combined with a full south facing exposure, means the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines grown here enjoy a unique micro climate –temperatures are on average a full degree and a half warmer than other vineyards is the region, giving rise to superb levels of ripeness and maturity, even in difficult vintages. Year after year, this magnificent site produces singular Champagnes that few other sites can match. Imbued with legendary longevity and awesome power, Clos des Goisses truly is a champagne like no other.
Following the success of last year’s release, today, Justerini & Brooks, the almost 270-year- old fine wine and spirits Merchant, cements its long-time relationship with Champagne Philipponnat, by launching the brand new vintage, the spellbinding 2009.
A merchant that prides itself on uncovering, nurturing and delivering the world’s greatest wine producers and chateaux to its clientele, Justerini & Brooks consistently strive to ensure that relationships are at the forefront of the company’s ethos. Four years ago, Justerini & Brooks Champagne Buyer, Julian Campbell, established a now long-standing relationship between the St James’s merchant and Champagne Philipponnat.
“I was struck by the impeccable quality of the entire Philipponnat range,” says Julian. “But Clos des Goisses is something truly special. Produced in tiny quantities in the context of prestige Champagnes, this 5.5 hectare gem of a vineyard never fails to impress. It is particularly adept at expressing the vibrant density of the Pinot Noir grape, arguably the essence of the Philipponnat house style.”
Clos des Goisses 2009: “Opening up with a wave of wonderfully fresh cool chalk aromas, then touches of white spice, pear and fresh apricot, then citrus and buttered hazelnuts and finally mocha and a touch of fresh cacao nib – there’s a great deal going on here, a wonderful marriage between complex richness and keenly rendered flavours. On the palate this is a big and powerful Goisses but also refined, brimming with rich red fruit, pastry, brioche, raspberry and finally the zest of lemons providing a keen, taut edge. Highly vinous, textural, long and complex, this is as regal as you’d expect a Goisses to be from a vintage like 2009. Superb, a true Clos des Goisses. Everything here was harvested between 11.5 and 12 degrees potential alcohol, with the final blend composed of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay. As usual none of the components went through Malolactic fermentation.” Julian Campbell, Justerini & Brooks.
